Tips for renting in Le Mans
The Cite Plantagenet, Le Mans' medieval heart, is best approached by bike and then explored on foot. Lock up at one of the stands near the quarter entrance and wander the narrow cobbled lanes lined with half-timbered houses and Roman-era walls. The cathedral square offers a good starting or finishing point.
The banks of the Sarthe river provide a continuous, traffic-free path that runs through the city and out into the surrounding countryside. This route is flat, shaded in summer and suitable for all fitness levels. Heading south, it connects to the voie verte greenway through the bocage landscape of the Sarthe valley.
For more athletic riders, the roads around the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit are wide, well-surfaced and surprisingly quiet outside race weekends. An e-bike is worth considering if you plan to venture into the hillier terrain north of the city.
During the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, demand for bikes rises sharply as visitors use them to reach the circuit and navigate the city. Booking ahead during this period is strongly recommended.
