Tips for renting in Marseille
Between May and September, book at least 48 hours ahead, especially for weekends and for mountain bikes headed to the Calanques. Demand spikes once the mistral dies down, and electric models are the first to sell out.
Most Marseille rental shops ask for a credit-card pre-authorisation as a security deposit and a valid ID. For a Calanques mountain-bike ride, make sure a helmet, a heavy-duty lock and two spare inner tubes are included — the rocky trails puncture tyres easily.
Inside the city, the Corniche, the Vieux-Port loop and the Coulée verte du Jarret offer the most pleasant and safest rides. Avoid major axes like La Canebière at rush hour, and watch out for the sea breeze, which adds effort on the way back.
In winter, several shops offer monthly packages that are popular with students and residents without a bike storage room. Check the theft insurance carefully: Marseille is not the gentlest city for bikes parked outside.
For the Calanques, plan an early-morning start from Luminy or Callelongue. Afternoon heat makes the climbs punishing, and the trailhead car parks fill up fast.
